Participative Kelp Science, Training and Engagement (WG5)

Goals

Our goal is to exchange knowledge about the multiple participative science programs in BC and WA. We document, compile and synthesize information about various programs, and provide training and participation opportunities for them.

Specific Goals:

1. Provide training for community based & Indigenous-led surface monitoring.

2. Provide community science training for subtidal monitoring action.

3. Develop and carry out science-meets-art project(s).

Priority actions & deliverables

These objectives and deliverables were mapped out by the group in the first WG1 meeting. They are a work-in-progress and will continue to be refined. 

1. Provide training for community based & Indigenous-led surface monitoring

   1a) Review surface-based methodologies and training programs: provide access to resources.

   1b) Empower cross-border planning of mentorship and training programs for kelp monitoring

2. Provide community science training for subtidal monitoring action

   2a) Implementation and training of subtidal SCUBA monitoring methods with communities and organizations (e.g. Reef Check)

   2b) Review participative research projects, e.g. comparative experimental/assays (e.g. predation/grazing metrics)

3. Co-design a collaborative kelp art project to draw attention to changing kelp forests in this region
